Adam was created perfect. Initially innocent, sinless, and holy, he was in a right relationship with God, with himself, with his wife and with the natural world around him.
God tested Adam to see if he would obey Him and trust his Heavenly Father.
Genesis 2:16-17
And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Adam failed the test, instead of trusting God he listened to the lies of the serpent. In doing so he involved all humanity in his defeat, dragging the human race down with him. As a result, in Adam we all stand condemned, spiritually bankrupt, enslaved to sin.
Romans 5:12
'Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned'.
Surely it isn't fair that because of Adam's fall from grace through disobedience that we are all connected to him as depraved and guilty sinners, included in the sentence of death which God pronounced on him.
Why should we be cursed through what one man, the first man did? We didn't disobey God in Eden but all of mankind from that point forward inherited sin as soon as they were born. Thanks Adam, its all your fault. I mean why should every human suffer for what one man did? Why? We don't deserve that? Right?
But just hold on a minute? What about the last Adam? The Lord Jesus Christ? The son of God who came to earth and died on the cross? To repair the damage done by the first Adam in the garden. Jesus did all of that for us. A man and fully God at the same time, He died so that we might live.
Now I'm sure you'll admit we certainly don't deserve that? But Jesus still did it. One man paying the ultimate price for us all.
Romans 5:8
'But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us'.
A good comparison of the two Adams.
