Is Jesus coming soon

Jesus in Matthew 24 told His disciples about the end of the world and how it would all come about with wars and rumours of wars, increase in natural disasters and the persecution of true Christians.

Matthew 24: 6-9
'And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake.'

Jesus did not give a specific date of when the end would come but He gave clear indications of the beginning of sorrows or 'birth pains' to describe the events leading up to His return.

Firstly, these birth pains describe the way that events in the world and Church take place, beginning slowly and almost without notice, then coming faster and more dramatically.

Secondly, birth pains leads to a baby being born, and this event is not only prophesied throughout the Old Testament, but in the book of Revelation. Therefore the beginning of sorrows is the start of the inevitable process that leads to the return of Jesus.

Nobody can say with any degree of certainty when Jesus is coming again. But it certainly looks like it will be within the next few decades.

Mark 13:32
‘But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father’.

Why is it very likely that Jesus will come again to usher in His Kingdom within the next say 30 or 40 years? Well as mentioned above the ‘birth pains’ are certainly getting closer together, almost at fever pitch. Earthquakes, floods and wars and rumours of wars are frequent and never far from news headlines all over the planet.

Here are some other things that point to a soon return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 -         False prophets and Christs - Jesus taught that the problem of false teachers and prophets will get worse. There have been many recent examples of these evil imposters and fake preachers. These range from such cults as Mormonism and Moonies to fake Christs like David Koresh.

Mark 13:32
‘For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect--if that were possible’.

-         Godlessness in the last days
For anyone who has watched television, read a newspaper, or just walked outside their front door, it is obvious this prophecy has been fulfilled by our generation.  Our leaders or those in power are often corrupt; our cities are filled with crime, brutality, and neon signs proclaiming our sinful, godless nature.  The New Age Movement brings in increasing numbers of mystics who claim to be the enlightened ones.  They are some of the most educated and influential people in our societies, and yet the most lacking in real truth or faith.

2nd Timothy 3:1-5
‘But realise this, that in the last days difficult times will come.  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of god; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth’.

 -         Apostasy (falling away from the faith)
Churches today are more and more embracing the New Age agenda, and denying Christ as the only way to salvation.  Giving in to the politically correct media and a corrupt society, they have embrace homosexuality as an acceptable alternate lifestyle and preach tolerance and compromise in place of God's truth for the salvation of the world.

1st Timothy 4:1-3
But the spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.  By means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.

 -         Israel becoming a nation again
The Book of Matthew gives many details of the last days and perhaps one of the most striking is the parable of the ‘fig tree’. Jesus said that when you see Israel re-blooming, whenever that would take place that the generation alive at that time would be the one that would be on the earth and living when the ‘last days’ would occur. Israel was destroyed in 70 AD, and it bloomed again on May 14, 1948. This is the date that history records that fact occurring.

Matthew 24:32-35
‘Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled’.

The time of the ‘last days’ that Jesus referred to is not in the distant future it will be happening very soon. Jesus is at the door knocking, if you haven’t answered it yet then please open it and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour.

  1. In answer to your title question, 'yes', but as for 'how soon'? I don't know, but I agree with every one of your points. Whether it is 30 or 300 years, all I know is that I must be ready. Your last line is the crux of the matter. We must answer the knock at the door, and accept Jesus' free gift of salvation, then it doesn't matter when He will return. Good points and well worded!

  2. Hello David and thanks. Yes we really don't know when Jesus will return. As you say we just need to be ready and accept the gift of salvation. We are in the days of Noah again, Jesus will return soon. As it says in Luke 21:28 when the end times signs appear in quick succession then the appearance of The Lord is very very close. Much closer to 30 than 300 years.

'So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!
