We live in a world full of traps and temptations. As Christians we are far from exempt from such things. Around every corner we are exposed to forces that test our strength to resist and remain true to the Holy Spirit indwelling within us.
Sinful acts always begin in the mind with an internal agreement to commit sin. We must wage war against these inner lusts if we are to avoid entering into temptation and committing evil acts.
1 Peter 2:11
'Dear brothers and sisters, you are foreigners and aliens here. So I warn you to keep away from evil desires because they fight against your very souls'.
God does not tempt anyone but everyone is tempted to sin when they give in to their own evil desires.
James 1 12-15
'Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death'.
One of the very best ways to resist sin is to get closer to God. Pray to God each day and let Him know everything you’re feeling. What you want, and ask for the help and strength to get there. Immerse yourself daily in His holy word by dedicating quality time to reading and studying the Bible.
Perseverance is the key, one day and one step at a time. If we stumble and fall then we get up, ask for genuine forgiveness, turn from our sin and try again.
James 1:4
'Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything'.
Tomorrow is a new day, we can start over and put the past behind us and focus on trusting in God. Tomorrow’s temptations may be greater than today’s, but God’s grace promises that He takes care of all our tomorrows. If we trust our Saviour and cling to Him then we will win the daily battle against sin.
The future, when the Lord returns, will mean an end to all suffering when Christ comes to take us home. The promise of entering Heaven to worship our wonderful God in eternity pushes us to persevere and walk the narrow path that leads us to glory.
Good word. I especially liked the statement at the beginning that 'Sinful acts always begin in the mind with an internal agreement to commit sin.' Sums it up really well! Thanks.
